Andrew

Founder

I am a software engineer who grew up in the Boston area and never left.  My parents met at MIT in the 60’s and I followed their example, graduating in 1994 with about as much of a polymathic degree as one could have expected: bachelor’s in theoretical computer science with a de facto double minor in history and planetary science (I could not complete the second minor as the two final requirements for the minors conflicted last semester). My parents are both type-A people, and I believed that it was my duty to continue on for a PhD like most of the other educated people I knew.  However, I left after a Master’s as my interests had shifted out of computer science by that point to astronomy.  I eventually began learning on my own, left with an insatiable curiosity to understand how and why everything works.  It is a standard engineering mentality, except in my case I applied it to spirituality, sociology, and many other non-technical fields.

My hobbies have grown significantly over the years.  Starting with a base of math and science, I grew into philosophy, creative writing, personality typing, meditation, rock collecting, songwriting, and photography.  The only thing which has limited my growth to this point is the fact that in some cases I do not know what to look for.

I founded Nerdstock when I discovered that a niche urgently needed to be filled in society.  It appeared that we were overlooking the experiences of people from unusual backgrounds and fields in several ways.

The world needs interdisciplinary thinkers to bridge the gap between the silos.  A good analogy would be this: which character would you hire to fight a dragon in a fantasy world: a 12th-level fighter or a 6th-level fighter/6th-level magic user combination?  Sure, the fighter is good at attacking the dragon, but what is he supposed to do if the dragon is behind an invisibility spell?

The more unorthodox the thinker, the more groundbreaking the discoveries could be–and unusual enough to change society from the ground up.

But first steps first.  And we must always start with step one.

Get all the people in one place and see what happens.

Rachel

Hello, I’m Rachel. I became involved with Nerdstock shortly after meeting Andy. While math and science are not really my strong points, I really love fiber arts and crafts, as well as cooking. I’m more on the humanities and literature side of intelligence. Nerdstock is a great opportunity for different types of people to discuss world issues from alternative points of view. I look forward to meeting you!!!
